A group of Year 11s visited the University of Nottingham last week to participate in Higher Education workshops and to take a tour of the campus. On arrival we were greeted by three university ambassadors who guided us to the Great Hall in the impressive Trent Building which was our base for the morning. Here, our students took part in two special workshops about Higher Education. The first session covered the importance of research and our host, Franklyn, talked to students about how they might navigate the different choices available to them when choosing a university. The second session was all about finance and budgeting, and Year 11s learnt about different strategies which could help them to manage their money. They also found out about how the student loan system works. The group then took part in a number of interactive activities and games to test what they had learnt.
After a well-earned lunch, the student ambassadors took our Year 11s on a big tour of the University Park campus which is set in extensive greenery around a lake. We viewed some of the student accommodation, science buildings, libraries, sports facilities and the Students’ Union which houses restaurants, shops and the student support centre. Our students had the opportunity to go inside a lecture theatre to see what it might feel like to sit in a class with hundreds of other students – quite different to our classrooms back at school! The group also learnt about student life and the huge number of societies available to join.
Whether they choose to stay in education, training or go into employment at post-18, this visit has helped our Year 11s to understand some of the different options available to them and where their hard work might lead to in the future. Thank you to the University of Nottingham for hosting us and giving our students such a valuable experience.
