As part of our activities to mark National Apprenticeship Week, a group of Year 10 students went to visit the Dome at Buxton & Leek College for an Apprenticeship Experience afternoon. The college gave a presentation about how apprenticeships work, the different types of roles available and what employers are looking for in applications. Students also learnt about how long the training takes, how much they could earn and the benefits of doing an apprenticeship.
The group then visited different apprenticeship stalls where they met the tutors, took part in subject demonstrations and picked up information to take home. Students watched Catering demonstrations and got to taste the results, with delicious waffles and pancakes on offer. There were also interactive activities for Carpentry and Engineering, Early Years and Education, Hair, Beauty and Spa, Business, Customer Service and Accountancy.
The students had shown a keen interest in either Hair and Beauty or Hospitality and Catering, and the group were taken on a tour of the college’s professional training facilities. They visited the salons and spa areas which are also open to the public, and then went on to view the catering kitchens where apprentices learn to become bakers and chefs.
Our Year 10s enjoyed the afternoon and learnt a lot about apprenticeships which will help them to decide if this is the right option for them in the future. Thank you to Buxton & Leek College for hosting this event.
