A group of GCSE German students from Years 10 and 11 visited the University of Liverpool to attend the Goethe Institut’s ‘German Careers Roadshow’. The students took part in a series of workshops and panel talks to find out about studying languages at a higher level, the benefits of learning German and the different types of careers where language skills are an advantage.
One of the highlights of the trip was the brand new sound-proof interpreting booths at the university. Students were able to practise their translation skills and try their hand at consecutive interpretation inside the booths. The group also learnt about the university’s German language newspaper, ‘Scausländer Zeitung’, which is written by students.
Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum encourages students to understand the value of learning a foreign language. We aim to inspire them to look beyond their own community, understanding that communicating within a range of international settings has the power to make a positive difference in the world. This roadshow was the perfect way for our students to find out about the benefits of learning a language. The event was run by the Goethe Institut, Germany’s cultural organisation, which aims to promote knowledge of the German language and encourages international cultural collaboration.
Languages teacher, Ms Wright, said:
“This trip was a fantastic experience for our GCSE German students to find out more about German in a careers context. A highlight for me was definitely trying out the university's new interpreting suite. I felt like I was working for the UN!”
