Our Year 10s enjoyed an action-packed “Post-16 Week” at the end of June. The aim of this week is to encourage students to think about what they want to do when they leave school, to learn more about the world of work and to experience a college taster day. Students acquired lots of new knowledge and skills which will help them with decision-making and post-16 applications in Year 11.
They took part in a huge range of careers activities, including:
All Year 10s also attended a Taster Day at a local college to give them real-life experience of studying at post-16 level. They took part in lessons in a wide range of subject areas, many of which they had never tried before, including Animal Care, Carpentry, Childcare, Criminology, Engineering, Hair & Beauty, Health & Social Care, Mechanics and Psychology. This was a great opportunity for students to meet college tutors, navigate their way around a campus and try out special equipment.
This busy week culminated with our Employer Speed Networking event where over 20 local employers set up stalls in our hall. Students took it in turns in small groups to visit each stall, asking questions about the company/organisation, finding out what their job is like and learning about the qualifications and/or training they have had to do. This event was a great success, giving our students the opportunity to speak directly to employers and learn more about a range of different jobs.
Students have been having some great discussions in school about their experiences during Post-16 Week and are starting to think about and plan their next steps. We are looking forward to our Post-16 Evening for students and their parents which will be held in school on Tuesday 26th September (6pm – 8pm). We have invited a variety of local colleges and apprenticeship providers to have stalls in the restaurant, and there will also be talks for parents about post-16 options, levels of qualifications and the application process.
A big thank you to all of the post-16 providers and employers who supported our careers sessions, taster days and networking event:
