Music delivers mental health message to students

At the end of January, our students were treated to a fantastic live performance from up-and-coming singer, Joel Foster. Joel performed for all year groups throughout the day, singing some of his own material as well as a selection of well-known songs. At one point Year 9 student, Louie B, asked Joel what type of guitar he played and Joel invited him up to play with him. Louie started to play an Arctic Monkeys song and Joel sang along him which was just brilliant!

As part of his concerts, Joel also shared some advice with students on how to manage social media, friendships, peer pressure and mental health. He emphasised the importance of surrounding yourself with people who are a positive influence on you and how this can improve mental wellbeing. He also talked about being responsible on social media and focussed on group chats, giving some sound advice on how to approach and manage these.

This activity forms part of our ‘Learning for Life’ programme in school which aims to help students be happy and safe in their lives. The scheme runs throughout the year and includes guest speakers and special workshops which give our students time to reflect on the big issues of our age and to consider difficult questions.

Joel was a big hit, and he took time to answer questions and sign autographs before he left. All year groups thoroughly enjoyed his music and gained a lot from listening to his story and the good advice he had to offer.
