Chemistry workshop with the University of Oxford

A group of Year 10 students enjoyed an afternoon with a team from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford. They took part in a special workshop in school called “Plastics From Another Perspective,” looking at polymer life cycles and the use of analytical instruments. The session linked to a number of GCSE curriculum areas and included use of the university’s special portable Infra-Red Spectrophotometers. Students had the opportunity join in with a live Q&A with members of the university’s research team to find out more about their work. We were also excited to welcome back of one of Chapel High’s alumni, Beth Shires, who talked about her career and shared some of her PhD work with students at a lunchtime seminar.

Thank you to the University’s Department of Chemistry for an enjoyable and informative afternoon, students really enjoyed the workshops and feel inspired to learn more about this area of chemistry.
