Careers trip to Manchester Metropolitan University

As part of our Careers programme, we took a group of Year 10 students to visit Manchester Metropolitan University to learn about the benefits of Higher Education. Our Careers plan aims to inform students about the different options available to them post-16 and post-18, and encourages them to think about the routes they might take and where this could lead in the future.

Our day at MMU began with a talk from the university’s student recruitment team, in which we learnt about the different subjects on offer, what a typical week might be like and how university fees and funding works. We met four student ambassadors who shared their personal experiences with the group, including why they chose to go to university and the clubs and activities they are involved in. They also discussed moving away from home and what this has been like for them.

The ambassadors then took us on a tour of the university campus and facilities. We set off on the busy Oxford Road corridor and took in the Faculty of Engineering, Institute of Sports, Manchester Poetry Library, School of Art, School of Digital Arts (SODA) and the Faculty of Humanities. A highlight was sitting in one of the lecture theatres, considering what it would be like to be in here with a hundred other students, listening to a lecture and making notes.

It would certainly be quite a bit different to school! We also went inside the court room at the Law School to see how law students are able take part in simulated court proceedings.

Next stop was the Students’ Union where the ambassadors told us all about the events which are put on each week, and the huge number of societies they can join, which cover everything from AI to Zoology!

Before returning to our base inside the Business School, we also visited some of the MMU student accommodation and learnt about the different types of rooms on offer, from student halls to private rentals.

Our group then took part in a really useful session with the student ambassadors. We learnt about their different reasons for choosing to study in Manchester, the grades needed to study at university and even what time they normally get out of bed in the morning!

The weather was kind to us so we picnicked in All Saints Park before returning to our coach.

Our year 10s came away with a better understanding of what university life might be like and this experience will certainly help them to make more informed decisions post-16 and post-18.
