Author shares fiction writing tips with Year 8

A group of Year 8s were lucky enough to meet author, Emma Carroll, as part of our World Book Day celebrations. Many students had already read some of Emma’s historical fiction, including Letters from the Lighthouse, Frost Hollow Hall and The Girl Who Walked on Air, so they were thrilled to meet her and ask questions at this online event. The group were keen to find out how the author developed her characters, and they got some great answers. Emma told the group that she uses traits of people she knows to create and add to characters, and to make them come alive. For example, her friend is always late so the character in her new book is also always late. Emma also talked about writer’s block and how long it can take to write a book.

This was a fantastic opportunity for students to hear directly from an author and they came away with some great tips for writing their own fiction. Any students who are interested in reading Emma Carroll’s books can find a great selection in the school library.
